Green with Envy – The Beauty of Limes

GreeMargarita on Flag of Mexicon with Envy – The Beauty of Limes

Limes….not just for cocktails anymore!  Limes are a refreshing summertime treat, used in gin & tonics, margaritas, and Mexican beer.  But what about spa treatments?  If there’s citrus on the menu it’s usually standard lemon, orange, or grapefruit.   Limes however, can bring you great benefits so get ready to refresh yourself all over.

Limes contain even more antioxidant properties than their citrus cousins.  Remember your history, limes were eaten MP900387874[1]onboard ships to prevent scurvy because they offer twice the Vitamin C of lemons!  Limes can naturally lighten, brighten, exfoliate and purify skin, as well as nourish and tone.  They have astringent properties which can be helpful for oily or acneic skin issues too.

As an added benefit, the scent of lime can energize and rejuvenate your mood.  Lime provides clarity not only physically, but mentally as well.  It is uplifting, cheerful, mood enhancing, and may have anti-depressant properties.  So if you’re looking for a brighter complexion, to clarify breakout prone skin and to rejuvenate your mind and body, look to limes for your answer.

Some of my favorite lime spa treatments are Theravine™’s Crushed Pinotage Honey & Lime Buff exfoliating scrub.  I can’t get enough of the scent, it is the most delicious and intoxicating scrub I have ever experienced.  It’s refreshing and a true mood enhancer while exfoliating my skin and making me soft and smooth all over.

Do You have “Winter Skin”? Part 1

During dinner with friends recently, the topic of dry, winter skin came up.  Do you know you need to update your skincare in the winter, just like you do your wardrobe?  If not, you’ll be stuck with “Winter Skin”, that dull, dehydrated, itchy and sensitive skin that affects both men and women.

If it’s January, you most likely have “Winter Skin”, no matter where you live.  Warm ocean breezes and trade winds of summer are replaced by dry, arctic winds.  Humidity in the air decreases with cooler outside temperatures, and you immediately notice a difference in your skin.  What most of us refer to as “dry skin”, is really dehydrated skin, occurring when the outer most layer of the skin has a moisture content below 10%.

Skin needs a moisture level of 10 – 30%.  Humidity and sweat all increase the moisture content in our skin during the summer, but in the winter we don’t produce as much oil either, leading to drier skin.  This double whammy causes fine lines to multiply, skin to thicken and flake, and we suddenly appear “older”!  Irritation and sensitivity along with visible scales or patches of dry, dead, itchy skin are all symptoms of “Winter Skin”.

So what can you do?  It’s important to switch your skincare products and routines to fit the time of year and your current skin conditions.  Do everything you can to minimize the water loss and evaporation from your skin.  If you don’t have a personal esthetician, you can register for one on my website

  1. Dial down the water temperature and avoid those long hot soaking showers!  Hot water just use up lots of energy and cause your skin to dry out even more.  A moderate temperature is best.
  2. Please stop using soap!  Soap strips the natural protective layers we need on both our face and body!  Theravine’s Hydravine Cleanser leaves a molecular film on your skin so its moisturized and hydrated. Oxygen Botanicals Milk Cleansers in your skin type are another good choice.
  3. Use a non-alcoholic toner.  This key step is often overlooked by many of us. It removes any left over facial cleanser and returns skin to its proper PH levels, very important in the winter.  Theravine’s Hydravine Toner continues the hydrating and moisturizing effects of its cleanser BUT is contra-indicated for anyone with nut allergies!  PCA-Skin has a delicious Pumpkin scented Nutrient Toner appropriate for all skin types and conditions.
  4. Restore lost oil production with Theravine’s Facial Oils, termed “liquid gold” by one of my friends.  These grapeseed based oils and potent anti-oxidants and very similar to natural sebum so they will not clog your pores or cause breakouts.  In 3 formulations to aid skin conditions.
  5. Exfoliate face and body twice a week to keep cells sloughing and negate any signs of scales or itchy, thickening skin.  My personal favorite is Theravine’s Pinotage Exfoliating Enzyme.  This gel works like little pac-men, eating the gunk clogging your pores.  Oxygen Botanicals Multi-Fruit Acid Refiner is quick and easy, use in place of a night cream once or twice a week and wash your face in the morning.  Theravine’s Grapeseed Body Exfoliator and Merlot Bath and Shower Gel help keep the rest of you looking and feeling great!

Look for tips on appropriate moisturizers in my next blog and natural winter skincare you can make at home.  Keep your skin hydrated, moist and supple all winter long….You owe it to yourself and your skin!
